The Odyssey entered a region of space where time echoed, repeating moments from the past. Captain Elena Vasquez stood on the bridge, watching as events replayed before her eyes.

"Command, this is Vasquez. We've encountered a temporal anomaly."

"Copy, Odyssey. Proceed with caution."

Kaelen appeared beside her. "It's a time echo. A moment in history, frozen and repeated."

"Whose history?"

The echoes showed the First Ones-their rise, their war with the Devourers, their ultimate sacrifice.

"They're trying to tell us something," Elena said.

"Yes," Kaelen replied. "They want us to remember."

The echoes faded, leaving behind a single image-a map, showing the location of a hidden weapon.

"The Devourers' bane," the Builder said. "The First Ones hid it here."

"Then we find it."

The Odyssey followed the map, traveling to a dead star. The weapon was there-a massive ring, pulsing with red light.

"Activate it," Elena ordered.

The Builder interfaced with the controls. The ring glowed, sending a pulse across the galaxy.

"The Devourers are retreating," Kaelen said.

"Their power is fading."

The weapon powered down, its energy spent.

"Command, the threat is neutralized."

"Copy, Odyssey. Good work. Come home."

Elena looked at the ring, at the sacrifice the First Ones had made.

The universe was vast.

And full of echoes.

The end.

The debriefing room was cold, bright, and smelled of old coffee. Captain Elena Vasquez sat across from Colonel Marks, her flight suit still zipped, her helmet on the table between them. Marcus stood by the door, waiting to give his own report.

"You let them go," Marks said. It wasn't a question.

Elena met his eyes. "They didn't cross. I had no authority to engage."

"You could have forced them. Pushed them. Gotten them to fire first."

"That's not why we're here."

Marks leaned back, studied her for a long moment. "You're right. That's not why we're here. But there are people above me who wanted a different outcome. A stronger message."

Elena kept her voice steady. "The message was clear. They turned back. They know we're watching. They know we're ready. That's the message we need to send. Not escalation."

Marks was quiet. Then, slowly, he smiled. "That's why I put you in that cockpit, Vasquez. You think before you shoot."

He stood, gathered the reports. "Good work out there. Both of you. Get some rest. Tomorrow there'll be another patrol. Another test. They're not done testing us."

Marcus walked with Elena back toward the hangar, the first light of dawn painting the runway gold. The Raptor sat where she'd left it, ground crew already swarming over it, checking, repairing, preparing.

"You think they'll try again?" Marcus asked.

Elena looked at the eastern horizon, where the border lay invisible beyond the hills. "They'll try. That's what they do. They push, we hold. They push again, we hold again."

She touched the Raptor's fuselage, still warm from the flight.

"That's what we're built for."

They walked toward the barracks as the sun rose, the base coming to life around them. Somewhere beyond the horizon, the enemy was regrouping, planning, waiting. But for now, there was peace. For now, there was only the dawn, and the long runway, and the jets waiting for the next call.

Elena stopped at the door, looked back at her aircraft one last time. "Tomorrow," she said. "We'll be ready."

The hangar doors closed, and the Raptor slept, waiting for the next mission, the next pilot, the next moment when silence would end and the sky would speak again.
